Advent Reflections

There is an ancient tradition of reciting the GREAT O ANTIPHONS before and after the recital of The Magnificat at Vespers (Evening prayer) from Dec 17th – 23rd inclusive. There are therefore seven antiphons, seven appellations of Christ, and the members of the Living Word Group are aiming to post a separate reflection on each one during the season of Advent. You are probably more familiar with these antiphons as they appear in the verses of that great Advent hymn “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”

O Sapientia (Holy Wisdom)

O Adonai (Lord)

O Radix Jesse (Root of Jesse)

O Clavis David (Key of David)

O Oriens (Morning star)

O Rex Gentium (King of the nations)

O Emmanuel (God with us)

The first reflection on O Sapienta will be posted on this page on (or a little before) Advent Sunday, 29th November. We aim to post our reflections on the subsequent Wednesdays and Sundays in Advent.
