The vicar of the Parish of Old Basing and Lychpit is the Rev'd Heather Leppard

My role

The Institution Service for the Rev'd Heather Leppard was held on Wednesday 26th June, 2019

The Vicar is responsible for the pastoral care of everybody in the parish (whether they go to church or not!) He or she organises and conducts worship, officiates at weddings, baptisms and funerals. He or she visits the sick at home and in hospital, hears confession, and prepares the dying for death. He or she seeks to teach the christian faith by word and example, and prays for those who are placed under his care.

The vicar bears the ultimate responsibility for the Church building and Churchyard, and represents the Church in the local community, helping to provide a focus for cooperation and goodwill.

About Me

Rev’d Heather Leppard grew up in Fleet and is looking forward to returning to Hampshire to serve as Vicar of St Mary’s next summer.  She has been serving as Assistant Curate in Harnham in the Diocese of Salisbury since 2015. Prior to ordination, Rev’d Heather worked in university chaplaincy; worked in outreach for the Methodist Church; interned at Derby Cathedral; and lived in Christian communities volunteering among refugees and asylum seekers, and people with learning difficulties. She also holds degrees from the Open University and the University of Cambridge. Her faith has been nurtured particularly through church music, pilgrimages to Taizé and Santiago de Compostella, contemplative prayer, and social action. Rev’d Heather is married to Rev’d Dominic Thornton, and they have two young children. They enjoy being outdoors and love running and walking. They are very much looking forward to getting to know the community in Old Basing and Lychpit.
